Fitting Accolade for a Deserving Learner
nominated for LSC Learning Awards
In November Tees Valley Learning and Skills Council held their annual learning awards. The event has a history of being a tough competition, with only the best learners being put forward, so when JHP found out one of our learners had been nominated we were over the moon!
Not that luck had any part in Retail learner Ashley Smith's nomination - hard work, and an incredible achievement rate have made him one of our very best learners, despite having initial difficulties when he joined JHP. When Ashley first came through the doors of JHP Training he had little self-confidence, but with help and support from Centre staff he was found a work placement with a local carpet company. Here he was given training and encouragement from both his team and Manager as he set about achieving his Apprenticeship.
The work placement gave Ashley a chance, and he never looked back - within eight months he had completed all the units on Retail Apprenticeship and was offered a full-time job with the company. Friends and colleagues have seen him turn into a confident, competent young man, his dedication to achieve being recognised by his nomination for the award.
Ashley narrowly missed out on scooping the "Best Retail Achiever" award, but the nomination itself, not to mention the £250 prize, are certainly great accolades to both him and those who have supported him
JHP Gloucestershire goes on the look-out for new learners at regional Festival of Skills
60 High Schools, 5,500 pupils - welcome to the world of Gloucestershire Skills Festival, a showcase of many of the major training options available for young people in the area. Held at GL1, Gloucester's impressive Leisure Centre, JHP turned out in force to promote our range of Apprenticeships and e2e programmes to pupils and careers advisors across the region.
During the course of the three-day event, many thousands of Year 9 and 10 pupils from local schools attended the Festival, surveying the choices open to them after their GCSEs. A wide range of training providers, colleges and public sector employers were in attendance, including JHP, with an eye-catching new stand attracting many pupils to talk through their career options with our staff. In addition our Early Years Care stand, in the Wellbeing Zone, attracted a good many visitors, learning a little about the Apprenticeship programme whilst creating their own biscuits!
All in all the event was a great success - it is hoped that many pupils will take JHP on board and begin training with us once they finish at school.
Marathon Journey through Vocational Training pays Dividends for Michele
If you want an example of hard work and determination in the workplace, look no further than Michele Darby. Over the four years she's been training with JHP she has achieved no fewer than four Apprenticeship qualifications!
Michele joined JHP directly after leaving school, and initially worked on placement at Kingston Windows & Glass while she achieved an Apprenticeship in Administration. Her commitment to both her employer and her training programme was evident from day one, where she happily accepted a daily three hour round trip to work.
Clearly, Michele's dedication and training have thus far paid off for her. Her first qualification enabled her to gain full-time employment and since she has been going from strength to strength within her current company, gaining confidence and learning new skills as she progresses.
JHP are pleased to have helped and supported Michele through a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Administration, Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Administration, Level 2 Apprenticeship in Using IT and most recently Level 3 Apprenticeship in Customer Service. Well done, Michele, for all your hard work!
COPS Apprentice On Track To Succeed
When Lauren first started on the e2e programme, she was living in a hostel and was often spoken to by the police for drunk and disorderly offences. She had fallen in with a bad crowd, had very low self-esteem and no idea of what she wanted to do with her life. To begin with, Lauren's attendance was very poor but as she settled into the programme, she became more focused and her attendance increased.
During the programme, Lauren completed a 12 week project researching her interest in a career in the police force. The pivotal point for Lauren was visiting the local police station to interview a long-standing officer and two newly-qualified Police Community Support Officers (PCSO). She gained first-hand knowledge of the job and was determined to achieve the grades she needed in Literacy and Numeracy so she could train as a PCSO.
Lauren not only achieved her Literacy and Numeracy at Level 2 but has also completed a Level Apprenticeship in administration at Kendal police station as part of the COPS programme. Her job takes her all over the country and she enjoys it immensely.
Lauren remains determined to continue turning her life around and has a new group of friends who encourage and support her. She is working towards becoming a PCSO and then a police officer and is trying to secure a flat to stabilise her home life.
"e2e changed my life for the better and I am so glad I had the opportunity to be part of it otherwise I definitely wouldn't be where I am now".
