JHP Barrow Celebrates Young Citizen of the Year Success
with Inspector Geoff Steele
Two JHP Barrow Apprentices have received Young Citizen of the Year awards, sponsored by the Furness Community Achievement Awards Ceremony. Scott Quinn and Abigail Bonner were both placed at Cumbria Constabulary in Barrow for twelve months, during which they completed a Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship. They were nominated for the Young Citizen award by Inspector Geoff Steele, their personal mentor and supervisor for the twelve month Pathways to Employment programme, which was sponsored by Cumbria County Council (COPS). Both Scott and Abigail have gained employment at the police station following their Apprenticeship and are now hoping to progress onto Level 3 qualifications. JHP Barrow has placed a further five candidates on to the County Council Pathways programme at Kendal and Barrow police station and are hoping that the success will continue.
Dedicated Child Care Apprentice is an Inspiration
Ashleigh Fell joined JHP Barrow in October 2006 on a Level 2 Child Care Apprenticeship. As she was only 16, it was explained to Ashleigh that it would be difficult for her to obtain an employed status position as she could not be included in the staffing ratios within a nursery setting. However, Ashleigh demonstrated her desire to pursue a career in Child Care by undertaking a non-employed Apprenticeship at Quarry Brow Nursery which consisted of 16 hours unpaid work a week. Lynda Haines, the nursery manager was very impressed by Ashleigh's commitment and it was soon agreed that she would work voluntarily for four days a week as she was so keen to learn.
Ashleigh was progressing well and looking to achieve her ambition of completing her Apprenticeship within twelve months when she fell ill and was frequently admitted to hospital during a nine week period. Ashleigh was forced to halt her Apprenticeship, but as she felt well enough she began work at the nursery again, beginning with half days and building back up to her previous routine. Only a month and a half after returning to work, Ashleigh completed her Level 2 Apprenticeship.
Completing her Level 2 qualification and turning 17, meant that Ashleigh could now work towards her Level 3 Child Care Apprenticeship as an employed status learner which she continues to enjoy and excel at. Ashleigh is a very dedicated young lady who is committed to working with children and gives 100% every day. She is a valued member of the team at Quarry Brow Nursery and everyone at JHP Barrow looks forward to her completing her Level 3 Apprenticeship and moving on to her next challenge.
