JHP Group Commits to the Skills Pledge

Jim Chambers signs the Skills Pledge.
Jim Chambers signs the Skills Pledge.

JHP Group's CEO, Jim Chambers, has signed the Skills Pledge on behalf of the national vocational training provider, further illustrating the company's commitment to addressing the UK's skills shortage.

The Skills Pledge is a voluntary, public commitment by business leaders to support all employees in developing their basic skills and gain a minimum Level 2 qualification. The pledge was introduced by the government in response to the 'Leitch Review of Skills', which warned that the UK must raise its game on skills at all levels if it is to sustain and improve its position in the global economy. The Leitch Review recommended that organisations should be encouraged to make a pledge to train their staff to a minimum full Level 2 (equivalent to five good GCSEs) and JHP Group goes one step further by pledging to help improve the skills level of all the businesses that it works with.

JHP Group's full pledge is as follows:

On behalf of JHP Group Limited, I Jim Chambers, as Chief Executive Officer, make a commitment that we shall:

Actively encourage and support our employees to gain the skills and qualifications that will support their future employability and meet the needs of our business;

Actively encourage and support our employees to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills, and with Government support work towards their first level 2 qualifications in an area that is relevant to our business;

Demonstrably raise our employees' skills and competencies to improve company performance through investing in economically valuable training and development;

Actively encourage and support business that work with, and for us, to make a similar pledge to their employees.

Upon signing JHP Group Limited's pledge, Chief Executive Officer, Jim Chambers said:

"It is vital that as an employer, and especially as an employer in the work-based learning industry, JHP Group Ltd. continues to invest in the personal and professional development of its employees. By signing up to the Skills Pledge we're declaring our commitment to our employees, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to make sure they can do the best job they can for the learners and employers that come to them with the desire to enhance their own skills."

Helping individuals, and companies, to achieve outstanding results is at the heart of everything JHP Group Ltd. does and they strive to achieve outstanding quality in the training services they provide and so, with the introduction of the Skills Pledge, it is only natural that this dedication and commitment to enhancing skills within the public is extended within their own workforce.

Personal Care Rules Relaxed - Young People Encouraged to Join Care Sector

Jim Chambers with the Young Apprentices
Skills for Care believe that young people should
be able to provide personal care as long as they
receive the right training and supervision.

Major changes to the rules on 16-18 year olds providing personal care will enable more young people to start a career in the sector and help care businesses grow.

The Department of Health's National Minimum Standards (NMS) for care has previously stated that 'staff providing personal care to service users must be aged 18' and the Sector Skills Council for the care sector, Skills for Care, have long been campaigning to have this restriction lifted. Skills for Care believe that young people should be able to provide personal care as long as they receive the right training and supervision.

Care workers aged under 18 who wish to deliver personal care must have completed or be undertaking an Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care - their manager must also be satisfied that they are competent to carry out these tasks.

"This is a very significant change in the regulations governing how care workers under 18 can deliver personal care and is a reflection of the rapid growth of the Apprenticeship that is producing well trained young workers",

says Skills for Care CEO, Andrea Roe.

"It removes unnecessary barriers to recruiting and retaining young staff . as they will now be able to carry out the full range of duties based on their competence not just their date of birth."

JHP Training is one of the leading providers of Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care and supports all young people who would like to pursue a career in the care industry. If you are interested in the opportunities now available in the care sector whether you are under the age of 18 or not, please contact JHP Training and discuss your options with one of our consultants today.

Volunteers at Smith’s Wood and Castle Bromwich Children’s Centres

Daniel's Journey

Daniel, aged 19, came to the Children’s Centre as a volunteer with no childcare qualifications. He worked alongside Laura, a qualified play worker in Wood ‘N’ Tots nursery, one day a week.

Daniel was keen to study for an NVQ in childcare and was offered a placed by YMCA Training. However; as he was claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, Daniel was unsuitable for this course. He signed up on a programme with JHP Training instead. This programme allowed him to volunteer in the nursery three days a week, continue with his NVQ and have his travel expenses paid whilst still receiving his Jobseeker’s Allowance. The remaining two days a week Daniel went to JHP Training’s Business Centre where he was given support to put together a CV and apply for paid employment.

As a result of the excellent experience as a volunteer at Smith’s Wood and the support from JHP Training, Daniel was successful in obtaining a full-time job in a Birmingham nursery as a trainee. He received a £50 cheque from the training centre on starting his new job and is continuing with his NVQ in childcare - The Children’s Centre Team would like to wish him well in his future.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with us, please speak to Sharon.

A presentation ceremony to mark the achievements of Young Apprentices from JHP Gloucestershire has been hailed “a tremendous success” by JHP Training's new CEO, Jim Chambers.

The event was attended by guests including Parmjit Dhanda, Labour MP for Gloucester and Martin Wallace of Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, as well as parents and local business mentors. It was held to recognise the completion of the Young Apprentice's Technical Certificate exams, IOSH Working Safely qualifications and the High Achiever awards which are presented every term.

The Young Apprentices who are aged 14 -15 and come from schools throughout the county, have been studying for their Retail or Business and Administration Apprenticeships with JHP Training since September. They will shortly progress to the next stage of their course, a one-day-a-week work placement.

Speaking at the event, which was opened by Young Apprentice Co-ordinator Dee Northedge, Mr Chambers said he was proud to be involved in what was his first official awards ceremony since stepping into his new role.

He continued, “It is just uplifting to see the enthusiasm of these young learners, who have done so well to achieve this qualification. I hope their success will continue to grow.”

Ryan Gardner, a Retail Young Apprentice, shared his excitement at starting his work experience with Woolworths soon. He said, “I have gained a lot of experience at JHP Training and I am really looking forward to beginning my placement and gaining even more skills.”

Business and Administration Young Apprentice, Georgina Lauder, added, “I think today has gone really well. It’s been a great success and has really shown how much the course has meant to everyone involved. All our hard work has paid off!”

Co-ordinator Dee Northedge said, “I am incredibly proud of everything the Young Apprentice’s have achieved so far. It is a true testament to their enthusiasm and dedication to their training, that they have achieved such outstanding results in a relatively short space of time.

The learners will eventually spend two days a week in work placement, in order to successfully complete their Apprenticeship and will emerge equipped with the skills to become part of Gloucester’s redevelopment workforce of the future.
